DIY Macrame Pumpkin Hanging Tutorial

October 9, 2016

Fall is the most amazing season, so naturally I needed to find a way to decorate my room for my favorite time of year. And I thought, why not share the love? Below I will show you how you can create this modern take on Fall decor.

What You Will Need:

  • A 1 inch metal ring (Hobby Lobby)

  • 1 ball of natural cotton cord #24 (Hobby Lobby)

  • Miniature Pumpkin (I got mine from Sun River Gardens in Lindon, Utah)

  • Scissors

  • Measuring tape

  • Clipboard or hook to work on for stability

  • Optional: Rit dye in color of choice (Joanns)

Hanger Tutorial:

Step 1. Cut a 20" strand of cord to wrap around ring. Tie knot and trim off excess string.

Step 2. Cut 8, 60" strands of string. Pull 8 strands through loop until even on both sides.

Step 3. Put ring on clipboard to hold down. Cut 1, 120" strand of string. Fold strand in half and wrap around bundle of strings.

Step 4. Left half knot for 4 inches around the bundle of strings. Pattern will naturally start to spiral. Below is a video of how to do this.

Step 5. After you've done this for 4 inches, tie off string into a knot and cut off excess string.

Step 6. Grab 4 strands of string. You will then alternate between left half knot and right half knot, creating a series of square knots, to create a straight and flat patter. Video below to demonstrate how to do this. Do this for 2 and a 1/2"

Step 7. Continue to do this with the remaining strands. This will create 4 separate series of square knot patterns.

Step 8. Measure 2 and a 1/2" down and create a square knot by using two strands from one outside section and two outside strands from the adjacent section. (left half knot, right half knot, left half knot)

Step 9. Continue to do this around in a clockwise pattern. This will create a cagelike structure.

Step 10. Measure 2 and a 1/2" down from the square knot and repeat steps 8 and 9.

Step 11. Cut a piece of string to tie off hanging. I like to wrap mine around a couple of times to make a more secure base.

Step 12. Cut ends of strings to desired length. Then unravel the cord to create wavy effect.

There you have it! You can leave it this way or choose to dye the hanging. Below is a tutorial on how I dyed this piece.

How to ombre dye the hanging:

(Optional: use gloves if you do not want to stain your skin)

Step 1. Lay out foil on counter to prevent mess. Fill a container with 2 cups of hot water. Mix in bag of Rit dye.

Step 2. Fill bowl with about 3 inches of hot water. Mix in some salt with hot water and allow to dissolve. The salt will help prevent the color from fading.

Step 3. Rinse macrame piece in hot water. This will help the string to absorb dye better.

Step 4. Pour about 1/4 of the dye mix in the bowl of hot water. Dip entire piece in bowl of dye for about 15 seconds or until all parts of string have absorbed color.

Step 5. Pour half of amount of dye mix that is left into the bowl. Turn the macrame piece upside down and soak up to point where you want the color to start changing. Move piece in and out of mix so a distinct line is not created. This will create a more faded effect.

Step 6. For final rinse, put piece directly into dye mix for darkest color. Move in and out of mix for faded effect.

Step 7. Allow piece to dry over night. Then add pumpkin and  there you have it! Enjoy:)

You can create all sorts of patterns with macrame. Have some fun creating your own now! Having a variety of different hanger patterns will make for a cute decor collection. Happy Autumn season everyone!:)
